Job Description

Position Title: Director, APT Premium Service

Supervisor: Vice President, APT Syndication & Premium Service

 
Summary:
The Director has the key role of initiating and commissioning fundraising programs including proposal and budget review, content management and marketing. The position has primary responsibility for identifying strong pledge programs, shepherding that material through an advisory group process, and then guiding approved projects (roughly 12 per year) to completion to meet timetables for PBS fundraising drives. This position is supported by the Senior Program Associate, Syndication & Premium Service and reports to the VP of Syndication and Premium Service.
 
Essential Functions:
  • Actively brainstorm and/or solicit pledge projects and proposals from stations, producers, and program suppliers with a goal of releasing strong projects with corresponding Pledge Events for each major pledge period.
  • Ensure that adequate budgets for each project are prepared and adhered to, signed deal letters are executed for each project, stations are billed for each project in a timely manner, etc
  • Oversee all editorial duties (content development and review of rough cuts and final masters)
  • Ensure a pipeline of proposals/projects is available for review in monthly advisory group calls
  • Ensure that support materials for all projects (including suggested "in/out" copy, pitch points, and promotional material) is prepared in a timely fashion
  • Hire and work with station relations consultants to maximize program carriage
  • As required, facilitate and/or produce Pledge Events for each project.
  • Lead monthly conference calls with advisory group
  • Conduct personal phone calls with all members several times each year to seek program ideas and input, assess opportunities, and address station questions.
  • Track actual station pledge results (in concert with APT's Faxback) to develop meaningful metrics for success and monitor progress.
  • Conduct ongoing evaluation/assessment of PS Pledge Event criteria to ensure alignment with PBS Pledge Event standards and specifications.
  • Monitor PBS pledge pipeline in order to identify relevant APT Premium Service opportunities
  • Ensure that PS gets significant, sustained promotion via APT homepage, Current, PMD, web-promos, YouTube, and other appropriate media.
  • Orient new producers and project partners to Premium Service commissioning, policies and processes
  • Oversee the annual Premium Service membership renewal process
  • Participate with VP in the annual departmental budget process
  • Deliver on-camera presentation of projects to clients via APT pledge teleconferences
  • Must maintain dependable work attendance
  • Additional Duties And Responsibilities:
  • Perform any related duties as assigned.
  • Occasionally train staff.

    Qualifications:
    Education, Skills, Experience:
    This position requires the ability to develop and identify strong pledge programs, superior organizational skills, tact, solid editorial judgment, attention to detail, ability to manage expectations of multiple constituencies, excellent interpersonal and project management skills (particularly with third-party content producers/contributors working at a distance), strong time management skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously. The successful candidate will also possess a strong background in oral communication as well as writing for print and television, video editing and content production. A strong understanding of the Web and familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel and Lotus software applications is a plus.

    Bachelor's degree required or equivalent experience working as a public television programmer, program producer, pledge producer, or managerial background in a related field. Extensive working relationship with members of public television programming community and/or development community is strongly preferred. Five years public television experience with on-air pledge strongly preferred.

    Personal Characteristics:
    Candidate must be resourceful, self-directed, and a flexible team player. Demonstrated experience in a multi-tasking environment and ability to work independently under established and self-prioritized deadlines. Aptitude to work in a detail-oriented environment with strong focus on accuracy is imperative.
