From ocean to mountains and even deserts in between, Adventures in the Field takes viewers on fascinating nature trips into the wild and not-so-wild corners of America's Pacific Northwest. Explore how humans impact the environment, peek into the world of rare and endangered species, marvel at nature’s ancient wonders, learn about forest preservation, have fun in the wild with geocaching and track elusive inhabitants of the oceans. This popular series investigates a wide variety of topics so there is an adventure for everyone.

Sample topics include:

Birdathon: 48 hours on a non-stop, very unusual trip in search of hundreds of different birds. It’s like no bird watching trek you’ve ever seen.

Wind and Bats: Wind energy is promoted as clean, green and renewable, but wind turbines are killing thousands of bats. Scientists are learning why, what can be done and what it might mean for the future of wind development.

Geocaching: Treasure hunting with the help of satellites has swept the planet in the years since it was invented in 2000. Learn how it’s done.

Old Tree: Join a three-day journey deep into the Eagle Cap Wilderness in search of a truly ancient tree. Discovered recently on a dangerously steep mountain, the limber pine could be among America’s oldest.

Pygmy Owls: A tiny, seldom seen bird has been discovered alive and well in an unexpected place. Join a biologist who spent nearly a year tracking dozens of elusive pygmy owls in the middle of a city.

Sturgeon Balls: North America’s mega-fish is acting strange and we want to know why. Go underwater for an amazing look at giant balls of lethargic sturgeon gathering — and just sitting still — in the waters of the Columbia river.

Ocean Acid: Increasing CO2 emissions aren’t just affecting the atmosphere. They’re also turning the ocean more acidic. Ocean acidification could have consequences for all ocean life, but it’s the shellfish that seem to be getting hit the hardest.

Green Roofs: Visit a city that is promoting eco-roofs in an effort to capture some of the 10 billion gallons of rain that flows off 12,000 acres of roofs each year.

Brown Pelicans: Brown pelicans have been removed from the endangered species list. But when thousands of pelicans were injured from winter storms recently, volunteers at the wildlife center rushed to save them, nurse them and release them back to the wild.

Dead Zone: An investigation into a mysterious dead zone off the coast of Oregon that has been killing a variety of marine life.
